ALOR SETAR, Jan 26  (Bernama) -- An Indonesian construction worker was fined RM300 and ordered to perform six hours of community service by the Sessions Court here today after pleading guilty to a littering offence.

Judge N. Priscilla Hemamalini imposed the sentence on Jufri Zulkifli, 39, who admitted to discarding a cigarette butt in a public area instead of using a designated dustbin.

The offence was committed at about 12.10 am on Jan 1 at the Alor Setar Tower.

The court ordered Jufri to carry out the six hours of community service at the rate of one hour per day over a period of two months.

Jufri, who is from Aceh, Indonesia, is the first individual to be prosecuted for littering in Kedah under Section 77A of the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007 (Act 672), which carries a maximum fine of RM2,000 and, in addition, a community service order of up to 12 hours within a period not exceeding six months, as determined by the court.

During mitigation, Jufri, who was unrepresented, told the court that he earns RM80 a day as a construction worker and supports his mother and child.

The prosecution was conducted by Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) prosecuting officer Nur Idayu Syazwani Mohd Arif.
