KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 4 (Bernama) -- Sri Lanka reaffirmed its commitment to strengthen the long standing bilateral relations with Malaysia as it marked its 78th Independence Day.

Acting High Commissioner to Malaysia M. I. Mohamed Rizvi said relations between the two countries have remained strong and consistently positive, bolstered by recent ministerial visits, with the High Commission working to build a more resilient economic and people-to-people ties.

Speaking at the Independence Day celebration on Wednesday, Rizvi encouraged Sri Lankan community in Malaysia to contribute to the country’s economic recovery and growth.

He said the diaspora can play an important role in helping to promote Sri Lanka as a destination for trade, investment and tourism among Malaysians.

“We are inviting all Sri Lankans and people of Sri Lankan origin to visit Sri Lanka. They can also do business and make investments in the country.”

“You can help promote Sri Lanka in Malaysia for business, tourism, investment and trade,” he said.

On Sri Lankan workers in Malaysia, he said the mission prioritises their welfare, a scope that is handled by its Labour and Welfare Section.

He also advised Sri Lankan nationals to always seek employment through the legal channels, adding that Colombo values Malaysia’s role and ongoing cooperation on recruitment frameworks and government-to-government arrangements.

On education, Rizvi noted that Malaysia is a major destination for Sri Lankan students, with nearly 4,000 to 5,000 currently studying in the country.

He said Malaysia is the second country with largest Sri Lankan population and students.

About 400 guests attended the commemoration, which Rizvi described as meaningful beyond ceremony, celebrating unity and humanity.

Sri Lanka gained its independence on February 4, 1948.
