KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 9 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) continues to strengthen its academic excellence across multiple disciplines, emerging as a national leader in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject 2026.

In the latest edition, UTP ranked first in Malaysia in three out of four evaluated subjects, namely Engineering, Physical Sciences, and Business and Economics, underscoring the depth and consistency of its academic and research capabilities.

UTP, in a statement, said in Engineering, it climbed one global band to the 151-175 range, up from 176-200, placing it first nationally and reflecting steady improvements in teaching quality, research performance and industry engagement.

UTP also maintained national leadership in Physical Sciences, remaining in the 201-250 global band, demonstrating sustained strength in both fundamental and applied scientific disciplines that underpin engineering and technological advancement.

A significant milestone was achieved in Business and Economics, where UTP made its debut in the 101-125 global band, securing first place nationally for the subject.

In Computer Science, UTP advanced one band to the 176-200 global range, ranking second in Malaysia and continuing its upward trajectory in the strategically important field.

UTP president Mohamed Firouz Asnan said the achievement reflects consistent and disciplined long-term capability building.

“These outcomes reflect steady strengthening across core disciplines that are critical to the nation’s future. Our focus remains on building academic depth, research relevance and talent that can contribute meaningfully to industry and society.

“Rankings matter insofar as they signal quality, consistency and impact. What is more important is how our education and research translate into real-world solutions, innovation and sustainable development,” he said.

The THE World University Rankings by Subject evaluate institutions using discipline-specific indicators covering teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement and international outlook.

UTP’s performance in the 2026 subject rankings reinforces its continued emphasis on outcome-driven education and research, aligning with its mission to be at the forefront of technology education and research, enabling a better future.
