PRETORIA, Feb 13 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- South African troops will be deployed to assist law enforcement in the fight against criminal gangs, Sputnik/RIA Novosti reported.

"To strengthen our fight against gang violence, I am deploying the South African National Defence Force to support the police," South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said during his address to the nation on Thursday.

According to him, the Minister of Police and the defense forces have already been instructed to develop a technical plan for the deployment of troops to the Western Cape and Gauteng provinces in the coming days.

Ramaphosa added that he will inform the parliament of the timing, location, and cost of the deployment, as required by the country's constitution.
