ABUJA, Feb 15 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- At least 11 people were killed and seven others injured after a bus and a truck collided on an expressway in Nigeria's southeast region, the traffic police said on late Saturday, reported Xinhua.
Franklin Agbakoba, the sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Enugu, told reporters in the state capital Enugu that a total of 36 people were involved in the incident along the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway on Saturday evening.
The two vehicles from opposite directions collided due to "wrongful overtaking and overspeeding," Agbakoba said, citing preliminary investigation.
He noted that the remains of the dead were sent to a nearby mortuary, while the injured were sent to a government hospital for treatment.
The traffic police commander said that they have cleared all obstructions on the expressway caused by the accident, which earlier hindered the free flow of traffic.
Deadly road accidents are frequently reported in Nigeria, often caused by overloading, bad road conditions, and reckless driving.
