KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 17 (Bernama) -- Celebrated by diverse communities nationwide, Chinese New Year highlights Malaysia’s long-standing spirit of unity, harmony, and togetherness.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he once again attended the Chinese New Year Open House organised by the MCA at Wisma MCA here.

Also present was Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“Traditional dishes, cultural performances, and the camaraderie of friends from diverse backgrounds truly reflect Malaysia’s multicultural identity, while sharing the same respect, joy, and sense of togetherness,” he said in a Facebook post today.

Meanwhile, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said visiting friends’ homes on the first day of Chinese New Year is not simply about accepting invitations, but also a way to show appreciation for friendships and to maintain long-standing bonds.

“For me, these visits are about far more than just the food and festivities. They are an opportunity to sit together, catch up, share stories, and strengthen the bonds that our busy lives often leave little time for.

“In an atmosphere of red decorations and warm smiles, you truly feel the beauty of our diversity and how it unites us as one big family here in Sarawak,” she said.

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the country’s cultural diversity is a source of strength and helps foster a spirit of togetherness among ministry staff and the wider community during the festive season.

He added that he had also distributed 1,000 boxes of mandarin oranges to ministry staff as a gesture of appreciation.

Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali urged the public to draw inspiration from the Year of the Fire Horse, with the horse symbolising agility and courage, and fire representing a burning spirit to drive efficiency and enthusiasm in both work culture and national development.

“Most importantly, we must all safeguard and nurture peace, prosperity, and unity. To the Chinese community nationwide, and especially in Papar, my family and I wish you a Happy Chinese New Year,” he added.

Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad said Chinese New Year is not merely a celebration, but also an opportunity to strengthen community ties and cultivate a spirit of togetherness.

“Chinese New Year is more than just a celebration; it is a bridge that brings us closer together. It also provides an opportunity to strengthen relationships and nurture unity,” she said.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek expressed hope that the spirit of togetherness would continue to flourish.
