19/02/2026 02:53 PM

MOSCOW, Feb 19 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- Spain's birth rate in 2025 increased for the first time in a decade, reaching 321,164 children, the Spanish Statistical Office said, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

"According to preliminary estimates, a total of 321,164 births were registered in Spain in 2025, an increase of one per cent compared to the previous year (an increase of 3,159). Although the number of births had been steadily declining over the past decade, the figure showed a slight increase in 2025, which has yet to be confirmed by final data, thus breaking the downward trend of the past ten years," the institute said in a statement on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the trend toward later motherhood continues in the country – in 2015, women aged 40 and older accounted for 7.8 per cent of all births, while in 2025, this figure reached 10.4 per cent.

At the same time, 446,982 people died in the country in 2025, which is 2.5 per cent more than in 2024. Thus, the natural population decline amounted to 122,167 people, the statement added.
