KOTA KINABALU, Feb 20 (Bernama) -- The Sabah government has intensified evacuation operations and the distribution of aid to flood victims in several affected districts, following continuous rain since yesterday.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said that all security agencies and relevant departments have been mobilised to ensure that rescue operations, and the evacuation of residents to temporary evacuation centres (PPS), are carried out swiftly and in an orderly manner.

“Despite the blessings of Ramadan, some of our brothers and sisters are being tested by the flood disaster. I express my deepest sympathy to all affected victims. The safety of the people is the state government’s top priority.

“The state government is also monitoring the current situation, and will continue to do so to ensure that assistance is delivered quickly and effectively,” he said in a post on Facebook, today.

The Chief Minister also urged all residents in flood-affected districts and nearby areas to remain vigilant, comply with instructions from the authorities, and prioritise the safety of themselves and their families, while avoiding any unnecessary risks.

“During this blessed month of Ramadan, let us pray and extend assistance according to our respective abilities. May Allah SWT grant strength, perseverance, and protection to all those who are being tested,” he said.

Three districts - Kota Marudu, Pitas, and Paitan - were declared flood-hit at 6 am today, following continuous rain which has affected the districts since yesterday.

Several areas and residential neighborhoods in Sandakan were also reported to be affected by flooding, including Kampung Pangeran, Taman Fajar, and Taman Merpati. The floods have also caused several main roads to be inundated, and incidents of fallen trees.

As of now, two PPS have been opened to accommodate 336 victims, from 111 affected families, in Kota Marudu and Pitas.

In Kota Marudu, the PPS in operation is Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tandek 2, which is accommodating 274 victims, from 83 families.

In Pitas, PPS have been opened at Sekolah Kebangsaan Rukom, accommodating 24 victims, from 18 families, as well as the district council hall, which is housing 38 victims, from 10 families.

Security personnel are currently actively evacuating affected villagers to the PPS, while continuing to monitor other areas identified as being at risk of flooding.
