PUTRAJAYA, March 2 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is taking action over the re-circulation of a 2024 video involving an incident in Singapore that contains content deemed insulting to Islam, including an act of stepping on the Quran.
In a statement today, MCMC said it had received public complaints regarding the video, which is believed to have been re-uploaded recently, triggering anger and tension within the community.
“Based on preliminary investigations, the individual involved is believed to be a Singaporean and the incident is also understood to have taken place in Singapore,” read the statement.
MCMC added that it is working closely with the relevant social media platforms, particularly Threads, Facebook and TikTok, to ensure appropriate measures are taken, including blocking the distribution of and access to the content within Malaysia.
The commission stressed that disseminating content that touches on religious sensitivities and has the potential to disrupt harmony in Malaysia’s multiracial and multi-religious society is irresponsible and may be subject to legal action under existing laws.
“The public is advised not to upload, share or re-circulate such content,” the statement said.
Members of the public with relevant information may lodge a complaint via MCMC’s official portal at https://aduan.mcmc.gov.my or report the matter to the Royal Malaysia Police for further action.
