PUBLIC NEEDS TO QUESTION MPS WHO DIDN'T SUPPORT BILL ON PM TERM LIMIT - LOKE

02/03/2026 10:36 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, March 2 (Bernama) -- DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke expressed his disappointment when the Costitutional (Amendment) Bill 2026 to limit the Prime Minister’s term to 10 years did not receive the support of two-thirds majority of the Dewan Rakyat today.

Loke, who is also Transport Minister, said DAP worked hard to realise the reformation agenda with all 40 of its MPs showing up to support the bill.

“For the amendment to pass, it requires the two-thirds suppport or 148 MPs appearing physically. The decision to support is 146, or two votes less of a two-thirds majority.

“Civil society and voters who wish to see instutitional reform in the country must Masyarakat sivil dan pengundi yang ingin melihat reformasi institusi dalam negara condemn and question the MPs who were absent and did not support this amendment, including the opposition bloc," he said in a Facebook post.

Earlier, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul announced a split vote, which saw 146 members of Parliament supporting, 32 absent and 44 abstaining.

Meanwhile, PKR Women’s chief Fadhlina Sidek described the decision by certain MPs not to support the amendment as a betrayal to reform efforts and expressed her disappointment as the bill was part of the institutional reform agenda aimed to ensure that democratic process, and the country’s governance were strengthened.

“The people have a right to question the decision of the MPs who did not support this bill, which reflects their unwillingness to be part of the national reform agenda.

“They (the MPs) should be completely rejected during the upcoming general election,” she said in a statement today.

She also reiterated the support of PKR Women’s Wing towards Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the MADANI Government’s agenda to further strengthen national governance for the benefit of all Malaysians.
