TEHRAN, March 4 (Bernama-dpa) -- The body of the slain Iranian religious leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is to be buried in a Shiite shrine in his home city of Mashhad, according to the Fars News Agency on Tuesday, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

The news agency, which is affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, reported that the burial is expected to take place near the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad, as was the case for Khamenei’s father.

The mausoleum of the eighth Imam in Twelver Shia Islam, located at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad, is regarded as one of the most important Shiite holy sites in Iran.

A public farewell ceremony is scheduled to take place in Tehran before the burial, according to the news agency, with details of the programme and timings to be announced later.

Mashhad, a northeastern metropolis with a population of about three million and Iran’s second‑largest city, was the birthplace of Khamenei on April 19, 1939. He was killed in an airstrike in Tehran on Saturday.
