FAHMI ZAINOL REMOVED AS PENANG EXCO MEMBER - CHOW

04/03/2026 03:53 PM

GEORGE TOWN, March 4 (Bernama) -- Penang Agrotechnology, Food Security and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol has been dropped from the state executive council, effective today.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who announced this, said he received an official letter from PKR secretary-general Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh yesterday requesting that the Pantai Jerejak state assemblyman be removed from his position as state exco.

"I met Fahmi this morning, and he (Fahmi) accepted the decision,” he told a media conference at his office in Komtar today.

Chow said he would propose Fahmi's replacement to the Yang Dipertua Negeri of Penang, Tun Ramli Ngah Talib, this afternoon for his consent, before his office issues an official statement on the replacement.

Chow added that the proposed replacement for Fahmi will be from the same party.

The Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Central Leadership Council has decided to suspend Fahmi Zainol, also the Penang PKR vice-chairman, from all party posts with immediate effect after he was charged with voluntarily causing hurt to his wife.

On Feb 27, Fahmi, 35, pleaded not guilty to the charge in the Balik Pulau Magistrate's Court.

The court allowed bail of RM2,000 with one surety and fixed April 28 for the next mention.

Fahmi, who was one of Penang's youngest state executive councillors, took his oath of office in August 2023.

Meanwhile, Chow said in a statement that Tun Ramli has consented to the appointment of Bukit Tambun assemblyman Goh Choon Aik as a state executive council member, in line with Article 7 of the Penang State Constitution.

Chow said the appointment will take effect from the date of the presentation of the instruments of appointment and the ceremony for the taking of the oath of office, allegiance and secrecy that will be held at Seri Mutiara on Friday (March 6).

Goh, who is also the state PKR Central Leadership Council chairman, has been appointed to replace Fahmi, who was removed as state executive council member today.

Goh, 52, has been the Bukit Tambun assemblyman since 2018, and heads the Batu Kawan PKR, a post he won uncontested in last year's party elections.
