KUALA LUMPUR, March 9 (Bernama) — The Khir Johari Gold Cup, expected to take place this April, will be the first event held at the country’s new sepak takraw venue at the Jalan Raja Muda Sports Complex in Kampung Baru, which has been upgraded into the Malaysia Sepak Takraw Academy, according to Sepak Takraw Association of Malaysia (PSM) president Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan.

He said the building, which is now fully completed, is expected to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in conjunction with the prestigious tournament.

“The Khir Johari Gold Cup will be the first tournament here and in conjunction with the event we are planning the launch of this building by the Prime Minister.

“We are still seeking confirmation of the exact date the Prime Minister will be able to attend,” he said after the PSM breaking-of-fast event here today.

Commenting on preparations for the tournament, Mohd Sumali said the group draw for this edition has been conducted, with a total of 21 teams set to compete in the men’s category while 12 teams will also take part in the women’s category to further enliven the prestigious tournament.
