SULTAN NAZRIN GRACES OPENING OF MASJID JAMEK KAMPUNG JERAM IN KAMPAR

KAMPAR, March 9 (Bernama) -- The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, today graced the opening of the Masjid Jamek Kampung Jeram here.

His Royal Highness arrived at about 7 pm and was greeted by Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.

Also present were Perak Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIPk) president Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini, Perak Islamic Religious Department (JAIPk) director Datuk Harith Fadzilah Abdul Halim and State Secretary Datuk Ahmad Suaidi Abdul Rahim.

Upon arrival, the Sultan consented to planting a bunga tanjung (Mimusops elengi) tree before unveiling a plaque as a symbolic gesture to officiate the mosque.

The Ruler later broke fast with more than 350 guests and performed the congregational Maghrib prayers, then attended a dinner, followed by the Isyak and Tarawih prayers.

Masjid Jamek Jeram was originally a wooden mosque in Gunung Tunggal, Simpang Keboi, before it was relocated to its present site in 1914 on waqf (Islamic endowment) land.

The mosque features traditional Malay architecture with a two-tier pyramid roof and a small minaret. On Aug 17, 1934, it was gazetted as the official religious institution for Kampar.

To accommodate the growing number of congregants, a new mosque was built in 1982 adjacent to the old structure, featuring a modern concrete structure, a minaret and a larger prayer hall.

Its dome was inspired by the semi-open umbrella design of the National Mosque, while the old mosque has been preserved as a heritage building, symbolising the historical continuity of Masjid Jamek Jeram as a centre of worship and community unity.
