MALAYSIA EXPANDS COOPERATION WITH EUROPEAN ITS LEADERS TO ENHANCE SMART MOBILITY

11/03/2026 03:32 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, March 11 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is strengthening strategic cooperation with leading Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) organisations in Europe to drive the development of the country’s smart mobility ecosystem, in line with the Malaysia ITS Blueprint 2025-2030.

The Works Ministry (KKR) said in a statement today that the initiative was highlighted during an engagement session led by Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi with key European ITS organisations in conjunction with Intertraffic Amsterdam 2026.

During the session, Nanta held discussions with ERTICO-ITS Europe, ITS Germany and Connekt/ITS Netherlands on the latest developments in intelligent transport technology, while exploring opportunities for collaboration in smart mobility and digital transport infrastructure.

The ministry said the engagement reflects Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation in developing a smarter, data-driven and technology-enabled transport ecosystem.

“Malaysia also sees opportunities to leverage the experience of European countries in implementing smart mobility solutions, including digital traffic management, mobility data integration and the use of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence to enhance the efficiency and safety of transport systems.

“Malaysia values the opportunity to learn from Europe’s experience in implementing smart mobility solutions while building strong partnerships among governments, industry and research institutions,” the statement said.

It said discussions with ERTICO-ITS Europe focused on strengthening cooperation through research collaboration, knowledge-sharing platforms, capacity-building initiatives and participation in international ITS programmes.

“ERTICO also introduced the ERTICO Academy, which offers specialised training programmes for mobility professionals and could potentially tailor capacity-building initiatives to support Malaysia’s institutional development in the field of intelligent transport systems,” it said.

The statement added that in a separate meeting, ITS Germany shared the country’s experience in developing digital transport infrastructure and smart mobility governance.

“Among the key focus areas is the Artificial Intelligence and Mobility (AIAMO) initiative, a research programme that integrates artificial intelligence, environmental data and mobility management to improve traffic efficiency, sustainability and multimodal transport planning.

“The initiative brings together 14 research and industry partners to develop artificial intelligence-based solutions that support more efficient, safer and environmentally responsive mobility systems,” it said.

Meanwhile, discussions with Connekt/ITS Netherlands highlighted the country’s leadership in sustainable mobility, integrated traffic management and collaborative innovation platforms involving government, industry and research institutions.

Nanta also invited international partners to participate in mobility and road infrastructure platforms to be organised in Malaysia in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026.

“These include the Malaysian Roads Maintenance Convention under the MY ASEAN Roads and Traffic Tech Expo (MYARTTE) 2026, scheduled to take place from Sept 30 to Oct 2, as well as the Malaysia Road Conference 2026 from Oct 13 to 15,” the statement said.
