SHAH ALAM, March 13 (Bernama) -- The Selangor state government is making efforts to complete the Pulau Carey Port Development Master Plan, following the Cabinet's decision to approve the development of a third port in the state on Wednesday.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said for this purpose, the Selangor State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN), together with the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS), which is a subsidiary of the state government, will lead the development.
"This Master Plan will cover various aspects, including public infrastructure such as utilities, renewable energy, public transportation, digital connectivity, industrial areas, housing, industrial areas, as well as the preservation of local communities, including Malay reserve land and Orang Asli areas in Pulau Carey.
"This Master Plan will then assess the effectiveness of establishing a Special Local Authority to oversee the entire development of the third terminal in Pulau Carey, in line with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcement that this development should be expedited for the future of the country's economy," he said in a statement today.
Amirudin said the Cabinet's decision to approve the development would further boost the position of Port Klang, which is now among the top 10 major ports in the world, having handled 14.64 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) in 2024.
Elaborating further, he said the planning had been pursued by the state government since 2023, culminating in a meeting where the team representing the state met with the Prime Minister and Transport Minister Anthony Loke and his team on Dec 15, 2025.
Amirudin said the state government is also committed to working closely with the Ministry of Transport (MOT) and related federal agencies to optimise the development process of the third terminal in Pulau Carey and establish a Special Economic Zone in the area.
"All of this is very important so that the third terminal in Pulau Carey can boost the potential of Port Klang and become the main gateway for economic opportunities not only to Malaysia but also to Southeast Asia, especially in the current global crisis," he also said.
On Wednesday, Loke said the government had approved the development project for the third terminal at Port Klang in Pulau Carey.
The Cabinet meeting also approved the memorandum from the MOT for the development of the project, which will be implemented by the Selangor state government.
