BUKIT MERTAJAM, March 14 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP) plans to strengthen the cooperative movement at schools and educational institutions as early-stage ‘business schools’ to nurture entrepreneurial culture among students.
Its minister, Steven Sim Chee Keong, said he would hold further discussions with the Malaysia Cooperative Societies Commission (SKM) to realise the initiative so that students can gain practical exposure to the fundamentals of business.
“I want school cooperatives to become platforms for students to learn how to manage shares, conduct annual general meetings and develop business strategies.
“I also propose that cooperatives reward outstanding students with shareholdings as an incentive for them to engage with the cooperative movement, in addition to the existing awards such as trophies or medals,” he told reporters after the pre-launch of the Cooperative Self Collection Point initiative with Shopee at Koperasi Politeknik Seberang Perai Bhd (KopPSP) here today.
Sim said the cooperative movement should be guided by three core values - strengthening the economy, safeguarding public welfare and fostering unity regardless of race or political beliefs.
Apart from KopPSP, he also announced the appointment of Angkasa Mart in Tasek Gelugor as a Shopee self-collection point.
“This initiative aligns with the rapid growth of online shopping in the post-pandemic period. For the approximately 3,500 students at KopPSP, it means they can now collect their orders directly at the cooperative without having to travel far.
“From an economic perspective, the collaboration is expected to generate at least RM1,000 in additional monthly income for the cooperative through service commissions, without involving significant operating costs,” he said
Sim added that about 60 cooperatives nationwide are currently operating as collection points, and KUSKOP aims to increase the number to at least 100 by the end of this year.
