REVITALISED TAIPING CLOCK TOWER BLENDS HERITAGE AND MODERN TECHNOLOGY

TAIPING, March 30 (Bernama) -- The 145-year-old Taiping Clock Tower has been revitalised, blending historical charm with modern technology, and is now open as a visitor interpretation centre.

Located on Jalan Kota and once known as The Fort, the tower is one of Taiping’s most iconic landmarks.

Originally built in 1881 from timber and reconstructed in 1891 with bricks, the tower has previously served as the Town Police Station and a fire station.

State Tourism, Industry, Investment, and Corridor Development Committee chairman Loh Sze Yee said the RM400,000 restoration was funded by the Ministry of Finance and supported by various other contributors.

A highlight of the centre is a 3D model of Taiping, providing visitors with a clear visual overview of the heritage town’s layout.

The centre also features a Multimedia Centre screening documentaries on Taiping’s cultural and heritage narratives, alongside a dedicated gallery showcasing the town’s history and latest tourism trails.

“This is an excellent initiative by the Taiping Municipal Council and Taiping Heritage Society. We hope it becomes a key resource for visitors,” he said at the tower’s inauguration today.

Taiping Heritage Society president Liew Suet Fun said the focus is on delivering high-quality storytelling for visitors.

“The most important aspect is the quality of narration. The tower’s renovation highlights Taiping’s natural and cultural heritage, making it an ideal platform to share this information,” she said.
