SPM 2025 RESULTS IMPROVE ACROSS MOST STATES

KUALA LUMPUR, March 31 (Bernama) -- The 2025 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results recorded encouraging progress across several states, with improvements in the Grade Point Average (GPN) and a rise in the number of high-achieving candidates.

In the capital, state education director Megat Affandi Ismail said the GPN improved to 4.57 from 4.61 in 2024, marking the best performance since 2014.

He said a total of 15,947 candidates sat the examination in Kuala Lumpur,  up 2.18 per cent year-on-year, while those qualifying for certificates rose to 14,887, extending a five-year upward trend since 2021.

PUTRAJAYA also recorded an improvement, with its GPN at 3.31 compared with 3.44 previously.

State education director Nadimin Abdul Aziz said 99.19 per cent of candidates qualified for certificates, with 195 achieving straight A grades.

Only 13 candidates were absent, he said.

In PENANG, 750 candidates obtained straight As, including 25 who secured all A+. State education director Mohammad Dziauddin Mat Saad said a total of 16,545 or 92.26 per cent of candidates qualified for certificates.

KEDAH saw 715 candidates (2.81 per cent) achieve straight As, up from 649 the previous year, while its GPN stood at 4.52. State education director Abdul Rahim Mat said 24 candidates attained the highest distinction of straight A+.

PERLIS, however, recorded a slight decline, with 94.36 per cent of candidates qualifying for certificates compared with 95.01 per cent in 2024. State education director Rose Aza Che Arifin said the number of top performers also fell, and the GPN worsened to 4.67 from 4.57.

PERAK showed notable improvement, with its GPN rising to 4.49 from 4.63. State education director Zulkafli Mohamed Mokhtar said a total of 1,008 out of 28,058 candidates achieved excellent results, including 26 with straight A+.

NEGERI SEMBILAN outperformed the national average, recording a GPN of 4.16 against the national 4.42. A total of 754 candidates achieved top grades, with rural candidates showing stronger gains and a narrowing urban-rural performance gap.

MELAKA also improved, with 97.07 per cent or 10,881 of candidates qualifying for certificates, up from 96.14 per cent or 10,532 candidates in 2024. Its GPN rose to 4.26 from 4.43, while 390 candidates secured straight As, including eight with all A+, according to its state education director, Mahfudzah Mohamed Noor.

PAHANG saw 671 candidates achieve top grades, up from 595 previously. State education director, Ahmad Zamri Md Isa, said its GPN also improved to 4.08 from 4.23.

In KELANTAN, education director Siti Norina Muhamad said the state recorded a marginal improvement, with its GPN at 4.60 compared with 4.62 in 2024.

A total of 26,072 candidates registered, with 11 achieving straight A+.

In SABAH, 605 candidates obtained straight As, with three achieving straight A+, reflecting an overall encouraging performance, according to state education director Datuk Raisin Saidin.

SARAWAK recorded a better GPN of 4.79 in 2025 compared with 4.84 in 2024, with 31,509 candidates qualifying for certificates and 853 achieving excellent results.

Its education director, Omar Mahli, said the urban–rural gap also narrowed further, indicating improved access and education quality.

Overall, the results point to steady nationwide progress, with most states registering improved performance and a continued narrowing of achievement gaps.
