MCMC URGES ETHICAL REPORTING OF SENSITIVE CONTENT

31/03/2026 08:58 PM

PUTRAJAYA, March 31 (Bernama) -- All media organisations have been reminded to exercise strong editorial judgement and adhere to ethical standards when handling sensitive content, particularly involving accidents, tragedies and loss of life.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), in a statement today, stated that the dissemination of explicit or distressing images and videos, especially those depicting deceased victims, is insensitive and fails to respect the dignity of victims and the feelings of their families.

Such content, it added, is unethical and should not be shared or exploited merely to attract attention, boost engagement or increase online reach.

“Efforts to gain viewership must not override human values and social responsibility,” the commission said.

MCMC stressed that all media organisations must fully comply with ethical reporting guidelines to ensure content is published responsibly and with due sensitivity.

“Failure to meet these standards may result in regulatory action, including the suspension of related social media accounts.

“As such, all parties are urged to act professionally, responsibly and with respect for public sensitivities at all times,” it added.
