SIBU, May 17 (Bernama) -- Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) representatives are reminded not to forget the responsibilities and trust given to them by the people and to maintain harmony in the coalition for the future of the people of Sarawak.
Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the position held by representatives is not a symbol of rank, but a mandate that must be carried out with full sincerity and responsibility for the people.
"The seats we occupy are not a matter of personal pride, but were entrusted by the people for us to fight for their rights and destiny, regardless of race and religion," he said when speaking at the 2025 Pre-Gawai Ceremony jointly organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the Dudong PDP Service Centre and the PDP here tonight.
Tiong, who is also the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture and Dudong state assemblyman, stressed that the spirit of camaraderie among GPS component parties needs to be maintained and enhanced from time to time.
Tiong also supported the suggestion of PDP senior vice president Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh that all GPS members should avoid actions that weaken each other, including grassroots movements to bring each other down.
"We need to respect each other. Arrogant or egoistic attitudes among leaders will only fracture relationships in GPS and give an advantage to the opponent," he said.
He also reminded that divisions in the coalition could bring destruction, as happened in several political parties in Peninsular Malaysia.
"If our party is not peaceful, eventually the people will lose trust and we will be thrown out," he said.
In this regard, he stressed that harmony and unity are important foundations for all GPS components to achieve their common mission in fighting for the rights of the people and developing Sarawak as a whole.
"If we are united, no one can threaten us. Our main focus is to ensure that the people of Sarawak continue to progress and not left behind in the national development stream," stressed Tiong.
