LAHAD DATU, Nov 25 (Bernama) -- The proposal to create a new township in Felda Sahabat here will be presented to the Cabinet for further discussions, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said the proposal was a request from Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek to enhance the development of Felda Sahabat, in particular, and Lahad Datu, in general.
"The Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) has entrusted me to take care of Felda. Indirectly, I am the minister in charge of Felda affairs nationwide.
"Felda has constraints, problems now in terms of allocations for infrastructure, education, kindergartens, street lights and numerous other allocations, including haemodialysis machines,” he said when speaking at the closing of the Permuafakatan Komuniti Felda Wilayah Sabah programme at Dataran Ekspo here today.
Also present were Minister of Higher Education Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, who is also the Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary-general, and Ahmad Shabery.
In addition, Ahmad Zahid said the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) had approved the collaboration between kindergartens in Felda and Tabika KEMAS (pre-schools) to hold pre-tahfiz courses throughout the Felda network.
In another development, Ahmad Zahid, who is also the BN chairman, hopes that Felda settlers will support candidates from the party in the 17th Sabah State Election for the development agenda to be extended to Felda Sahabat.
Ahmad Zahid, when met later, said he wished to see a change on Nov 29 (polling day), especially among the settlers in Felda Sahabat and signify a resurgence among voters in Felda areas to align themselves with the MADANI Government.
He added that naming Saleha Abdul Wahid as the candidate for the Tungku state seat, Sharif Musa Sharif Mabul (Silam) and Datuk Seri Dr Anil Sandhu (Kunak) was aimed at providing the best service possible to all the constituencies.
Polling for the 17th Sabah State Election has been set for Saturday (Nov 29), with 1.76 million voters eligible to cast their ballots.
