UMNO GENERAL ASSEMBLY: NO MOTIONS RECEIVED TO WITHDRAW FROM UNITY GOVT - ASYRAF WAJDI

09/01/2026 06:52 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 9 (Bernama) -- UMNO has received 662 motions from 175 divisions ahead of next week’s 2025 UMNO General Assembly, with notably no motions proposing that the party withdraw from the Unity Government.

UMNO Secretary-General Datuk Dr. Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki stated that these motions were gathered from the UMNO Division conferences held last year, involving 175 out of a total of 191 divisions with Perak recording the highest number of motions at 133.

"The motions mostly revolve around politics, religion, education, and the economy. Among the 'hottest' or most frequently submitted motions by the divisions is the demand for justice and a full pardon for Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak," he said during a press conference here today.

The 2025 UMNO General Assembly is set to take place from January 14 to 17 at the World Trade Centre (WTC) Kuala Lumpur, after being postponed twice - in August and November - to make way for party preparations for the 17th Sabah State Election.

He noted that the UMNO Divisions also did not submit any motions regarding cooperation with other political parties, including PAS and adding that the party will not stop any spokesperson from raising views or grassroots sentiments during the debates.

Asyraf Wajdi added that 6,412 delegates have registered, comprising 2,928 for the main General Assembly, 1,165 for the Wanita wing, 1,173 for the Youth wing, and 1,146 for the Puteri wing.

He confirmed that representatives from MCA, MIC, and Friends of Barisan Nasional have confirmed their attendance for the opening ceremony.

However, Asyraf Wajdi stated that no representatives from other parties within the Unity Government were invited to the assembly, as the focus is entirely on internal party matters and to allow UMNO delegates and wing spokespersons to voice their opinions openly.

The assembly will kick off on January 13 with several "warm-up" programmes involving academic discourse, education, and party empowerment, including the Mutaqqaf Ilmuan Islam (Islamic Scholars Forum), the UMNO Patriotic School Convocation, and the Digital Era Political Symposium.

The simultaneous opening of the Wanita, Youth, and Puteri General Assemblies is scheduled for January 14 at Dewan Merdeka, followed by the respective wing conferences the next day.

The main UMNO General Assembly will officially begin on January 16 with the flag-raising ceremony, followed by the UMNO President’s policy speech and the subsequent debate sessions.
