KINABATANGAN, Jan 20 (Bernama) -- A total of 93 per cent or 176 police personnel fulfilled their responsibilities as early voters for the Kinabatangan parliamentary and Lamag state by-elections today.
Election Commission (EC) secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus congratulated the returning officer and the election team for the excellent execution of their duties.
“Appreciation and thanks are also extended to the Sabah State Secretary's Office, the Sabah Federal Secretary's Office, the Royal Malaysia Police, media personnel, and all parties involved directly or indirectly for their cooperation and support given to the EC,” he said in a statement here today.
The early voting process, held from 8 am to 5 pm at the Kinabatangan district police headquarters, featured a single polling stream. A total of 189 police personnel were eligible to cast early ballots for both by-elections.
The Kinabatangan parliamentary by-election features a three-cornered contest between Mohd Kurniawan Naim Moktar of Barisan Nasional (BN), Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman (Parti Warisan), and Goldam Hamid (Independent).
For the Lamag state seat, it is a straight fight between Mohd Ismail Ayob (BN) and Mazliwati Abdul Malek (Warisan).
The twin by-elections were called following the death of the incumbent for both seats, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, 66, on Dec 5 last year.
The EC has set Saturday (Jan 24) as the polling day for both by-elections.
