6,742 GRADUATES TO RECEIVE SCROLLS AT UUM 34TH CONVOCATION CEREMONY

ALOR SETAR, Nov 5 (Bernama) -- A total of 6,742 graduates will receive their degree scrolls at the 37th Universiti Utara Malaysia Convocation Ceremony at Dewan Mu’adzam Shah, Sintok from Nov 10-14.

UUM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan said the Sultan of Kedah, Al-Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah, who is also the UUM chancellor, will grace the opening session and confer degrees to the graduates involved.

"Of the 6,742 graduates, 5,539 are undergraduates and 1,126 are post-graduates comprising Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Management, Doctor of Business Administration and Master's Degree, while the remaining 77 are Executive Diploma graduates.

"A total of 6,330 are local graduates and the other 412 are international graduates from 24 countries, including Indonesia (151), China (55), Somalia (31), Saudi Arabia (29) and Palestine (six),” he told reporters here today.

He added that the Royal Education Award will be presented to Muhammad Shuib Rosli, 23, (Bachelor of Philosophy, Law and Business with Honours) and Emina Kulasic Bong Ei Min, 24, (Bachelor of International Affairs Management with Honours), while the Chancellor’s Gold Medal will be awarded to Nur Eina Athirah Norazman, 23 (Bachelor of Human Resource Management with Honours).

He said the recipient of the Royal Education Award will receive RM7,500 and a certificate while the Chancellor’s Gold Medal recipient will receive RM4,000 and a certificate. In addition, of the 5,539 undergraduates, 1,681 will be graduating with First Class honours.

"UUM will also be honouring the first batch of 30 graduates from three new programmes, namely Bachelor of Business Administration (Golf Management) with Honours (21 students); Bachelor of Science (Operational and Analytical Research) (eight students); and Doctor of Education (one),” he said.

Mohd Foad also said that UUM has set up a special committee to study the need for the setting up of an Engineering Faculty as proposed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in August.

He said UUM welcomed the proposal and is studying the matter in detail.

"This is still under internal study at the UUM level… the task force (special committee) was set up at the previous meeting,” he said when commenting on the matter. 

In conjunction with the Convocation Ceremony, UUM is also organising a Convocation Festival or PESKON37, themed “Alumni Gemilang”, from Nov 8-16.

It will be enlivened with performances by guest artistes like Wany Hasrita, Insomniacks, Ismail Izzani, SonaOne, Aiman Tino and Faizal Tahir.
