POTENTIAL OF PERAK'S MANGROVE CHARCOAL, BATU KURAU DURIAN FOR MYIPO REGISTRATION

IPOH, Dec 4  (Bernama) -- The Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) has announced that there are at least five famous products in Perak that have the potential to be registered as heritage intellectual property protected under Geographical Indications (GI).

MyIPO chairman Dr Mohd Zuhan Mohd Zain said that among the products in question are milk corn, Kuala Sepetang mangrove charcoal, Perak onions, Batu Kurau durian, Sungai Perak catfish and Teluk Intan giant river prawn.

“We are worried that if these famous products which are synonymous with Perak are not protected under GI, they will lose the rights to the names.

“For us, the significance of these products being registered under GI is as an attraction and also to help increase the state government’s economic revenue,” he said when met after officiating the MyIPO Satellite Office at Menara Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia (SSM) here, today.

Mohd Zuhan said he hoped that the authorities would register the intellectual property for the five products in question, which are considered to have their own uniqueness and quality.

Meanwhile, he said the opening of the first MyIPO satellite office in Perak is aimed at making it easier for entrepreneurs, designers, innovators and professionals to protect their creations and product branding.

He said previously, intellectual property owners in Perak had to go to the MyIPO branch office in Seberang Perai Tengah, Penang which also accept customers from Kedah and Perlis.

“The opening of this office will also continue to encourage more individuals and businesses to protect their innovations and work, thus contributing to the state's economic development,” he said.

In addition, he said MyIPO had received 53,456 intellectual property applications from January to October, compared to 50,570 applications in the same period last year.

He said of the total, 34,479 applications were from foreigners while 18,977 were from locals.
