JOHOR BHARU, Jan 12 -- The Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) Sdn Bhd sewage treatment plant in Taman Pelangi will undergo an upgrade to accommodate a population of up to 30,000 residents.
IWK Sdn Bhd's chief executive officer, Narendran Maniam, said the design study is currently underway and will be submitted to the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) and the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) for approval.
"We took over this plant in 2021, so continuous improvements are being made. The upgrading project is expected to be completed in about two years," he told Bernama.
Earlier, Narendran briefed PETRA deputy minister, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, who visited the plant, as part of the ministry’s South Zone tour today. It currently serves only 10,000 residents.
Akmal Nasrullah told Bernama that to increase the plant's capacity, proposed upgrades include enhancing the existing system with more efficient and modern mechanical technology.
"The PETRA Squad’s field visits to various states not only aim to assess progress and ongoing work but also to identify areas for improvement," he said.
"Based on today’s survey, we will ensure that the upgrade process is reviewed by SPAN before being considered at the ministry level," he added.
Akmal added that as a short-term measure, IWK plans to install metal cladding along the plant's perimeter to reduce odour pollution.
