PADANG BESAR, Feb 11 (Bernama) -- A joint research effort by Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA), and the Department of Agriculture has successfully produced Harumanis mangoes earlier than usual, with harvesting beginning in January instead of the typical season from March to June.
Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli said this achievement proves that Harumanis can be cultivated outside its usual season while maintaining the same quality through a more systematic planting approach.
"We can now see Harumanis available as early as late January, with taste and quality comparable to those harvested during the regular season.
"This is a positive development, not only for Perlis’ agricultural industry but also for farmers' income growth," he told reporters after launching the Harumanis season opening by Koperasi Y.A in Chuping today.
Meanwhile, Koperasi Y.A Harumanis Perlis chairman, Mohd Asri Yusof, said the success also involved 192 cooperative members cultivating Harumanis across 420 acres, with more than 27,000 trees in Perlis Utara (Zone A).
