GOVERNMENT URGED TO INTEGRATE AI AND DATA SCIENCE INTO NATIONAL CURRICULUM

KUALA LUMPUR, March 6 (Bernama) -- The government should integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and data science into the national curriculum from primary to higher education to equip citizens with the necessary skills to navigate emerging technologies.

Senator Datuk Nelson W Angang said this should be a key focus in the education sector today.

“Reskilling and upskilling provide workers with opportunities to acquire new AI-related skills, such as programming, data analysis, and digital literacy,” he said during the debate on the motion of thanks for the Royal Address in the Dewan Negara today.

He emphasised the need to instill a culture of continuous learning, ensuring individuals remain motivated to update their skills regularly throughout their careers.

Nelson also proposed that the government enhance collaboration between academia and industry to promote the responsible use of AI while addressing the challenges of developing a skilled workforce.

He emphasised the need to raise public awareness about AI’s impact on society, the economy and industries through seminars, public forums, and information campaigns.

Meanwhile, Senator Datuk Rosni Sohar proposed that the Education Minister introduce Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) at the primary school level, either through the curriculum or extracurricular activities.

“Teachers, especially school counselors who guide students on career pathways after graduation, should receive more in-depth training on TVET opportunities so they can effectively convey this information,” she said.

Rosni also called on Deputy Prime Minister and National TVET Council chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to launch a more comprehensive awareness campaign on TVET careers, suggesting dynamic initiatives such as career fairs, as well as outreach through social media and digital platforms.

The Dewan Negara sitting will reconvene on Monday.
