GRADUAL APPROACH NEEDED FOR AI IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS - EXPERT

Published : 09/03/2025 05:47 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, March 9 (Bernama) -- The introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) at the primary school level should be implemented gradually and organically, ensuring that it does not add to the existing syllabus burden, said a digital technology expert.

Association of Internet-of-Things Malaysia treasurer Pathmanathan Muniandy proposed that AI elements be integrated into subjects such as Mathematics and Science, allowing students to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the technology.

“We do not need to create a new syllabus solely to introduce AI. Instead, AI education can be incorporated by focusing on safe usage, ethics, and understanding both the capabilities and limitations of this technology," he said, in a statement to Bernama.

He added that early exposure to AI is crucial in building a strong knowledge foundation among students, equipping them to navigate and utilise the technology effectively, in their future careers and daily lives.

Pathmanathan also stressed that regular monitoring should be carried out, to ensure that AI integration in education remains relevant, and does not negatively impact students.

“I have observed that some primary schools have begun introducing chatbots such as ChatGPT and Copilot to students. However, we need to ensure that this technology is not misused, to the point where students are overly dependent on AI to complete their schoolwork.

AI should serve as a learning aid which fosters critical thinking and innovation, rather than merely functioning as an automation tool which diminishes students’ efforts, he said.

He emphasised the need for a balanced approach to AI usage in primary schools, highlighting the crucial role of teachers and parents in guiding children towards responsible use of the technology.

“If AI is introduced too early without proper guidance, it may lead to time wastage and over-reliance. However, when used effectively, AI can inspire creativity and innovation from a young age.

In this regard, he urged the Ministry of Education to continuously assess the effectiveness of AI integration at the primary school level, and refine its implementation, based on students' needs and comprehension levels.

With AI advancing rapidly, a well-regulated and balanced educational approach will ensure that students reap the full benefits without compromising the fundamentals of conventional learning.
