BLIND STUDENTS COMMEMORATE NUZUL QURAN WITH QURAN RECITATION

Published : 18/03/2025 06:34 PM

KUALA KUBU BHARU, March 18 (Bernama) -- While many people spend the Nuzul Quran public holiday resting at home or visiting shopping malls, a group of visually impaired students here chose a different approach.

With white canes and Braille Qurans in their hands, seven students from the Foundation Certificate in Tahfiz and Diploma in Quranic Memorisation and Qiraat courses at Darul Quran JAKIM here were seen entering Darul Quran Mosque’s main gate as early as 9 am.

Some of them carried eBraille Qurans, an electronic version of the Braille Quran, designed to facilitate Quranic reading for the visually impaired.

Accompanied by Ahmad Qusairi Mat Zizi, a lecturer at Darul Quran JAKIM who is also visually impaired, the students began reciting the holy Quran together in the mosque compound.

“Alhamdulillah, this is one of our main activities to commemorate the significance of Nuzul Quran, the event when the first revelation was sent down to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through Angel Jibril,” Ahmad Qusairi told Bernama here today.

As a former student and now a lecturer at Darul Quran JAKIM, he expressed his joy at seeing the strong determination of visually impaired students who strive to learn and appreciate the Quran despite their limitations.

“We never see our disability as a hindrance; instead, it is our strength because we know that the Quran will be our ‘syafaat’ (intercessor) in the hereafter,” said Ahmad Qusairi, who also produces Braille learning materials and exam questions for students at Darul Quran.

Sharing about the Quran learning methods for visually impaired individuals, he said that at the initial stage, students are taught Braille Quran codes which form ‘hijaiyah’ characters (Arabic letters), diacritical marks (visual symbols that guide pronunciation), and Quranic verses.

He said if visually impaired individuals can read the Quran, there is no excuse for Muslims with normal sight not to do the same.

Darul Quran JAKIM serves as Malaysia’s centre for Quranic memorisation education and reference centre for tahfiz and qiraat studies. It also conducts training and competency development for lecturers in the field of Quranic Tahfiz, in addition to carrying out research and studies in Quranic Tahfiz education.

The revelation of the Quran, known as Nuzul Quran, took place on the 17th of Ramadan while Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was in the cave of Mount Hira.
