PUTRAJAYA, April 15 (Bernama) -- The country's badminton legend, Datuk Lee Chong Wei suggested that athletes listed in the Road To Gold (RTG) programme in preparation for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA 28) accept the offer.
Chong Wei who is a member of the RTG committee said the offer given should not be rejected as it would greatly benefit the athletes involved, especially those who move professionally.
"For me as an ex-athlete, of course I am happy if I get this opportunity from the National Sports Council and the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS). Because it does not only help financially but also provides support services.
"So I hope that this time all athletes will sign for the RTG because previously there was one athlete who did not sign to enter the RTG program," he said when met by reporters after the Road to Gold (RTG) Committee meeting which took place at Menara KBS today.
Earlier, the RTG Committee named professional men's singles player Lee Zii Jia, Asian Badminton Championships men's doubles winners Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik along with 10 other badminton players for the RTG programme 2025.
In denying allegations that athletes' participation in the programme was used as promotional material, Chong Wei said the purpose of the RTG was to help further improve the performance of athletes in preparation for LA 2028.
"For me, if athletes sign up to enter this program, they will not lose," he said.
