ALOR GAJAH, April 21 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), in collaboration with the state education department, is coordinating the rollout of the Internet Safety Campaign, which is expected to begin next month.
State executive councillor for Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communication, Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan, said the campaign will involve more than 300 primary and secondary schools across Melaka, aiming to raise awareness about online safety and educate students on how to protect themselves from cyber threats.
“Today, even primary school students have access to social media, making them vulnerable to online dangers such as cyberbullying, paedophilia and scams,” he said.
“We’re awaiting further instructions from MCMC at the federal level before the state government proceeds with the campaign.
“It will potentially start as early as next month, or by June at the latest,” said the Rembia state assembly coordinator during the Rembia Aidilfitri open house last night, which drew more than 5,000 attendees.
Fairul Nizam explained that the campaign will also be extended to the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat programme, to broaden public awareness of online safety and cybercrime risks, ultimately protecting users of all ages.
He said the campaign complements the state government’s existing efforts, including the establishment of the Online Gambling, Fraud and Cybercrime Task Force, which was launched to combat cybercrime.
“The task force has already been deployed to schools across the state with the support of agencies such as the Royal Malaysia Police, Bank Negara, MCMC, and the Department of Information. However, the Internet Safety Campaign adds a new target group, schoolchildren under the age of 13,” he said.
