SIR JEFFREY CHEAH SUNWAY MEDICAL SCHOOL SET TO ELEVATE HEALTHCARE EDUCATION IN MALAYSIA

SUBANG JAYA, May 8 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s medical education landscape has reached a new milestone with the official launch of the Sir Jeffrey Cheah Sunway Medical School at Sunway University here, an initiative aimed at shaping globally competent healthcare professionals.

The launch ceremony, held last night, was officiated by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir and witnessed by Sunway Group Founder and Chairman, Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah.

In his speech, Zambry said the establishment of the medical school supports the government’s goal to strengthen Malaysia’s position as a global education hub.

“Currently, we host more than 130,000 international students from 140 countries. Through Education Malaysia Global Services, we aim to increase these numbers and provide a welcoming, high-quality academic environment.

“In a world where some countries are closing their doors, Malaysia is opening ours. We want to offer a place to study, a place to belong, contribute and thrive. That is the future we are building through higher education,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sunway University President, Professor Sibrandes Poppema described the launch as a defining moment in the university’s mission to develop not just highly skilled medical professionals, but also ethical and compassionate leaders in healthcare.

“Our goal is to produce doctors and researchers who not only excel in medical knowledge and clinical skills, but also lead with integrity, empathy, and innovation,” he said.

The new medical school complements Sunway’s earlier investment in the Jeffrey Cheah Biomedical Centre (JCBC) in Cambridge, underscoring its commitment to world-class education and biomedical research.

A key highlight of the launch was the White Coat Ceremony for the school’s inaugural cohort of medical students, during which they took the Hippocratic Oath, symbolising their formal induction into the medical profession.

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme at Sunway University offers a future-focused curriculum, with clinical training at the Sunway Medical Centre - a leading private quaternary hospital. Students will gain practical experience in patient care and work alongside interprofessional healthcare teams.

The programme also integrates digital healthcare technology, precision medicine, artificial intelligence and sustainable healthcare practices, preparing students for tech-enabled, globally relevant medical careers.

The Sir Jeffrey Cheah Sunway Medical School is poised to become a regional leader in medical education, research and innovation, contributing to the development of sustainable and community-driven healthcare solutions both in Malaysia and internationally.
