KUALA LUMPUR, May 16 (Bernama) -- Universiti Malaya (UM) excelled in defending the overall championships in the 2025 edition of the Sports Synergy Carnival organised by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in collaboration with the UM Sports Centre and the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama).

UM, which repeated its stellar achievement of 2022, managed to bring home six gold medals, one silver and two bronze medals while Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) was the runner-up (1-2-1 tally) and the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) took third place (1-2-0).

UTM Registrar Datuk Dr Mohd Sharil Abdullah stated that the carnival was not solely about competition but aimed to strengthen strategic relationships between higher education institutions and government agencies through sports activities.

“We plan to expand participation in the 2026 edition by adding more team sports and involve more agencies. The positive response this year proves that Sports Synergy is more than just a regular sports tournament — it is a social movement that fosters unity, an identity and synergy among the workforce,” he said at a press conference today.

Mohd Sharil also highlighted that the Sports Synergy Carnival aligns with the aspirations of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), reinforcing social networks, promoting equality and driving sustainable community development through sports.

Some 600 athletes from nine contingents - including UTM, UM, the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), HKL, MAIWP, Ministry of Defence Malaysia (Mindef), the Kuala Lumpur Police Training Centre (Pulapol), and Bernama — participated in the championships.

The two-day event held from May 10-11, took place across four different locations, including the UTM Kuala Lumpur Campus and the University of Malaya.

A total of nine events were contested, including nine-a-side football, netball, men's volleyball, team darts, men's and women's bowling, as well as badminton in the men's team, women's doubles, and women's singles categories.
