MALAYSIA URGES FULL IMPLEMENTATION OF ASEAN FIVE-POINT CONSENSUS IN MYANMAR

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has emphasised the need for a full and meaningful implementation of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus (5PC) on Myanmar, particularly the cessation of violence, the scaling up of humanitarian aid, and the pursuit of inclusive dialogue with all Myanmar stakeholders.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said this was conveyed during his courtesy call on Prime Minister and Union Minister of National Planning of the State Security and Peace Commission of Myanmar, U Nyo Saw, in Nay Pyi Taw.

“The upcoming elections in Myanmar were also discussed,” he said in a Facebook post on Friday.

Mohamad said the working visit was undertaken pursuant to the decision of the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in July 2025, and was carried out in the foreign minister’s capacity as ASEAN Chair 2025.

Mohamad departed for Myanmar on Thursday to hold discussions with his counterpart and the country’s top leaders.

Myanmar has been embroiled in a protracted political and humanitarian crisis since the military ousted the democratically elected National Unity Government (NUG) on Feb 1, 2021.

In April the same year, ASEAN leaders held an emergency meeting and adopted the Five Point Consensus which called for, among others, immediate cessation of violence, engagement of constructive dialogue with all stakeholders to restore peace and stability, and assessment of humanitarian aid to the people of Myanmar.
