MMEA REMINDS KELANTAN FISHERMEN TO BE VIGILANT IN FACING MTL

KOTA BHARU, Oct 14 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Kelantan has reminded the fishing community as well as boat operators in the state to be more vigilant during the upcoming Northeast Monsoon (MTL) period and unpredictable sea conditions.

Its director, Maritime Captain Erwan Shah Soahdi said that sudden weather changes during this season can be dangerous, especially to fishermen using small boats to catch fish.

MMEA advises all parties to prioritise safety aspects at sea, including always wearing life jackets and adhering to established safety procedures before starting any activity at sea.

"Every time you go fishing, make sure your immediate family members are informed about the location and duration of the operation to facilitate immediate action in case of any unforeseen incidents," he said to reporters here.

He also suggested that fishermen practice the 'buddy system' or go out in pairs as a precautionary measure.

“In the event of an emergency at sea, the presence of a friend can help to report it immediately so that rescue teams can carry out search and rescue operations quickly and effectively. With the initial information obtained, victims facing problems at sea can be assisted immediately and rescued from any disaster," he said.

Erwan Shah also emphasised that the MMEA will continue monitoring sea conditions from time to time and be prepared to carry out rescue operations at any time to ensure the safety of the maritime community in Kelantan waters is always guaranteed.
