MARAN, Oct 14 (Bernama) -- A total of 32 cases of theft of East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project connecting cables and several other components were recorded from June to Oct 10 with total losses exceeding RM3 million.

China Communications Construction (ECRL) Sdn Bhd (CCCECRL) Section 13 security director, Shi Liang Hui, said that of the total, Pahang recorded the highest number of cases, at 24 cases, followed by Terengganu (seven cases) and Kelantan (one case).

"Those involved in these cases only targeted overhead and ground cables as well as transformer boxes. These incidents could cause delays in the completion of the ECRL project," he told reporters after inspecting the location of the incident in Kampung Luit here, today.

He said that his party had held an engagement with the police and appointed two security companies to supervise the ECRL project site so that similar incidents would not occur again.

"We (CCCECRL) have also installed 66 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras since September as a preventive measure and to assist police investigations in the event of theft," he said.

Meanwhile, Shi advised the public to channel any information to the authorities if they see any cable theft activity.

"We must always maintain the security of this project because it is a national project for the convenience of the people," he said.
