MEXICO CITY, October 18 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- The death toll from floods and landslides caused by heavy rainfall in Mexico’s central and eastern regions has risen to 72, said the government, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
Mexican authorities previously reported over 60 deaths and 65 people missing.
"The total number of dead is 72 people, 48 remain missing," the Mexican government said in a Friday update.
The highest number of casualties was recorded in the central state of Veracruz (32 dead and 14 missing). The state of Hidalgo reported 21 dead and 29 missing; Puebla – 18 dead and five missing. One death was confirmed in the state of Queretaro.
More than 12,000 servicemen and rescue workers are involved in eliminating the consequences of floods and landslides in Mexico, according to the country’s government.
