KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 25 (Bernama) -- Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn expressed strong optimism for the Kuala Lumpur Accord (KL Accord) with a 'thumbs up' when approached by the media today.
Sokhonn, who spoke to the media after attending the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, smiled when asked about his hopes for the peace deal, which is expected to be a highlight of the 47th ASEAN Summit.
The KL Accord, formulated following the ceasefire arrangement between Cambodia and Thailand, is scheduled to be signed on Sunday and witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and United States President Donald Trump.
Sokhonn’s positive gesture followed a significant bilateral meeting yesterday with his Malaysian counterpart, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, where key mechanisms for the peace deal were finalised, including the Terms of Reference (TOR) for the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT).
Cambodia and Thailand have long been locked in a decades-old dispute marked by intermittent armed clashes along their 817-kilometre shared border.
The border standoff, which flared up on July 24 following an exchange of fire between Cambodian and Thai forces, was brought to an end on July 28 after both sides struck a deal during a special meeting hosted by Malaysia in Putrajaya.
