KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is ready to join a United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission in Gaza together with like-minded countries, including members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said the matter was conveyed to UN secretary-general António Guterres during a bilateral meeting held on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here today.
“Malaysia also reiterated its firm stance in support of the Palestinian struggle, and welcomed the UN’s consistent position as well as the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which affirmed that the Israeli regime’s blockade of humanitarian aid into Gaza constitutes a violation of international law,” Anwar said in a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
Anwar said the meeting also aimed to strengthen Malaysia’s cooperation with the UN, including under the ASEAN-UN framework, while expressing Malaysia’s full support for the UN reform agenda, particularly the Pact for the Future and the UN80 Initiative.
He further emphasised Malaysia’s commitment to advancing the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, through the implementation of the Complementarities Initiative 2.0.
In the 20-minute meeting, Anwar and Guterres also discussed Malaysia’s role as ASEAN Chair in facilitating peace negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia, as well as advancing inclusive dialogue efforts in Myanmar.
The discussion also touched on efforts to strengthen the global climate agenda, including the submission of Malaysia’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) 3.0 ahead of the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) in Brazil.
“Malaysia will continue to work closely with the United Nations in championing global peace, justice and sustainable development,” said Anwar.
Guterres arrived in Malaysia early Sunday morning in conjunction with the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, held under Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2025 themed ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability.’
