NADMA TO CHANNEL AID TO PENANG FLOOD VICTIMS SOON - CHOW

GEORGE TOWN, Oct 30 (Bernama) -- The National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) will channel assistance to eligible flood victims in Penang in the near future.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said NADMA had informed the state government about the matter and a total of 1,201 victims from 333 families had been moved to temporary relief centres (PPS) from Oct 24 to 27.

"This time the flood involved three districts, namely Seberang Perai Utara (SPU), Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) and Barat Daya with the opening of seven PPS during the day.

"Despite the flooding in Penang, we are grateful that the situation recovered in two to three days and no state government assets or buildings were affected by the flood," he told reporters at the Penang International Science Fair (PISF) 2025 press conference here today.

He also asked the public to be patient following the closure of Route P14 Jalan Tun Sardon (Bukit Baru) nearby to allow for slope cleaning and monitoring work to continue.

Chow also hoped that the work to repair the slopes or slopes that collapsed during the day could be completed more quickly because thousands of users, especially those passing through Teluk Kumbar and Bayan Lepas, were affected following the road closure to ensure the safety of users.

He said the slope repair work in the area would be carried out in the near future, possibly using concrete retaining wall construction method.

“The parts of the slope that were affected in the previous incident (2018) have all been repaired and lasted for almost seven to eight years, but the recent collapse involved parts that did not have concrete barriers installed,” he said.

Meanwhile, state Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said Penang Public Works Department (JKR) was continuing its activities of clearing debris, breaking rocks and removing obstacles (tree branches) along Jalan Tun Sardon.

However, he said that due to heavy rain since this morning, some cleaning and breaking rock activities were temporarily halted.

“The work was shifted to slope stabilisation and was carried out with caution, with the contractor in an effort to install canvas as protection from rain that could further move the soil.

Jalan Tun Sardon which connects Paya Terubong to Balik Pulau has been closed since the evening of Oct 23 due to a slope collapse.
