FORMER COMMANDOS EXPECTED TO SERVE UP TO 20 YEARS WITH AKPS

MELAKA, Nov 2 (Bernama) -- Former commandos joining the Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) are expected to contribute up to 20 years of service, said Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari.

He said the 220 commandos selected for AKPS comprise personnel completing their service with the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) and aged at least 40.

“After completing their military service, they will be absorbed into AKPS. Most are around 40 years old, so they can still serve effectively for the next two decades,” he told reporters after launching the Santuni MADANI ATM Melaka programme at Raudhatul Jannah Mosque, Bukit Katil, today.

Adly said those selected include members of the elite Special Service Group (GGK), Paratroopers (PARA), Naval Special Forces (PASKAL) and Air Force Special Forces (PASKAU).

“These elite troops bring extensive expertise that can strengthen border security. Many have served in strategic areas nationwide, making them well-suited for duties at the country’s entry points,” he said.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when tabling Budget 2026, announced that priority would be given to military veterans to fill the 220 positions required by AKPS to achieve full operational readiness.
