ALOR SETAR, Nov 11 (Bernama) -- The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) foiled an attempt to smuggle 67.48 kilograms of marijuana flowers, estimated to be worth over RM6.2 million, at the Tambak Persisiran Pantai Bukit Putih area in Kuala Perlis, last month.

Kedah Customs director Wan Marini Wan Hamzah said the operation was based on intelligence and carried out by officers from the Langkawi Marine Enforcement Branch, along with the elite Customs Operational Battle Force Response Assault (COBRA) team, at around 10 pm.

“The authorities discovered an abandoned wooden boat with four gunny sacks labeled in Thai.

“Further checks revealed the sacks contained a large quantity of marijuana flowers. The total weight of the seized drugs was 67.48 kilograms, with an estimated value of RM6,209,816,” she said in a statement today.

Wan Marini added that the drugs were believed to have been smuggled in from a neighbouring country via the wooden boat.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952..

She urged the public to support JKDM in the fight against smuggling, particularly of cigarettes, alcohol, fireworks, drugs, and vehicles, adding that such crimes not only cause financial losses but also threaten national security and public safety.
