KOTA BHARU, Nov 11 (Bernama) -- The number of dengue fever and leptospirosis cases in Kelantan has dropped significantly as of October, compared with the same period last year, the State Legislative Assembly was told today.

State Local Government, Housing, Health and Environment Committee chairman Hilmi Abdullah said from January to October this year, 1,192 dengue fever cases were recorded compared with 2,510 during the corresponding period in 2024.

“This shows a 52.51 per cent drop compared with last year. No dengue deaths have been reported this year, compared with two last year.

“A total of 87 dengue outbreaks (clusters) have been reported as of Oct 4, compared with 161 outbreaks during the same period last year, representing a 46 per cent decrease. All the outbreaks have ended, and there are no active clusters at present,” he said.

He said this in reply to a question from Dr Hafidzah Mustakim (PH-Kota Lama) on the state government’s proactive measures to curb the rise in dengue fever and leptospirosis cases during the state assembly sitting at the Kota Darulnaim Complex today.

Meanwhile, Hilmi said that 173 leptospirosis cases were reported across the state up to the 45th Epidemiological Week this year, compared with 360 cases during the same period last year.

He added that the data obtained so far showed a sharp decrease, with no clusters reported this year, compared with three detected during the same period last year.

“The state government always works with the Kelantan State Health Department (JKNK), local authorities and relevant agencies in tackling infectious diseases such as dengue fever and leptospirosis.

“Various proactive measures have been implemented by the state government, including the release of mosquitoes with Wolbachia, gotong-royong activities and others. Community cooperation in maintaining environmental cleanliness is also an important factor in reducing infection rates,” he said.
