KAYUHAN SANTAI PENANG SEMPOI TRANSFORMS PENAGA WITH VINTAGE BICYLES AND RETRO CHARM

KEPALA BATAS, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- The air in Penaga was transformed today into an exuberant scene of celebration as 200 participants brought the streets to life,  many dressed in themes from the '50s through '80s, as they pedalled classic bicycles in the Kayuhan Santai Penang Sempoi event.

More than just a showcase of beautiful vintage bicycles, the event was a journey through the charming panorama of traditional Malay villages around Penaga, including a stop at the renowned ecotourism destination, Kampung Agong.

The 10-kilometre ride, which began at 8.30 am from Masjid Ar Rahman in Permatang Rambai, was further brought to life by its participants, who appeared in the uniforms of firefighters, soldiers, sailors, policemen and postmen, all styles synonymous with the golden age of the classic bicycle.

The organiser, 64-year-old Ahmad Fauzi Ismail, shared that they had welcomed 200 entrants from across the Peninsula. He described the ride as a unique event celebrating cultural heritage and a spirit of community.

Two hundred vintage bicycles presented a wonderfully nostalgic picture, including iconic models like the Raleigh, Phoenix and Hercules, marques that were once the pride and joy of the nation, proudly exhibited by the participants who had meticulously preserved them.

"I’m overwhelmed by the incredible turnout. Some participants even cycled their classic bicycles all the way from Klang, Selangor, a journey they began two days ago. Many others transported their beloved vintage machines by vehicle," said Ahmad Fauzi Ismail.

He added that the most heartening aspect was the event's broad appeal, noting, the programme brought together multi-racial participants, making it a truly inclusive affair, with everyone from young children to senior citizens joining the ride.

Held in conjunction with the Jelajah Koperasi MADANI for the Seberang Perai Utara district, the event was officially flagged off by Fahmi Zainol, chairman of the Agrotechnology, Food Security and Cooperative Development Committee.

Among the enthusiasts was 47-year-old collector Sharif Mohamad Yusuf from Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, who owns a collection of 18 classic bicycles amassed over the past decade. Sharif had been preparing for the ride since last month.

"I originally planned to cycle my 1940s Raleigh 'Military Opel' all the way from Nilai to Penaga. "Unfortunately, I had to transport it in my van due to the persistently rainy weather," the businessman explained.

“Seeing all these magnificent classic bicycles gathered here today is exactly why I never miss a ride. It’s a chance to catch up with friends and share our passion. We’re always trading stories and tips about preserving these beautiful machines,” he shared, dressed in an authentic 1980s Royal Malaysian Air Force uniform.

Another enthusiast, G Bagabathiappan, 62, made the journey from Banting, Selangor, explaining that attending rides across the country is a cherished routine and the best way to exchange knowledge with fellow collectors.

His commitment to the theme was a highlight in itself. From his collection of five vintage bicycles, he chose a Raleigh for the day, perfectly accessorised as a traditional Indian milkman.

With a milk churn fastened to the rear, he cut a figure straight out of a scene from the iconic Tamil film, Annamalai, starring the legendary Rajinikanth.

“My interest began five years ago, and I’ve loved it ever since. I particularly enjoy rides with an era-specific theme. It allows me to step into a character and celebrate the fashions of old Indian society,” the government retiree said.

For 46-year-old Muhamad Azmi Ponikin, a gardener from Pantai Morib, Selangor, these events hold the key to fostering unity. He said such programmes should be organised more often, especially to attract the younger generation, to strengthen community bonds.

His passion is evident in his collection of ten classic bicycles, with a Japanese postal bike, sourced directly from Japan, being his most prized possession.

Beyond the nostalgic hum of bicycle wheels, the Jelajah Koperasi MADANI programme was a vibrant celebration of local culture.

The air was filled with the excitement of traditional games and competitions, such as coconut bowling, peeling and grating contests, as well as ketupat casing weaving.

The festivities also featured children’s colouring activities, live batik fabric art demonstrations and a showcase of traditional delicacies like pajeri and kerabu.
