LAHAD DATU, Nov 26 (Bernama) -- Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) candidate for the Tungku state seat, Datuk Abdul Hakim Gulam Hassan expressed his firm commitment to upgrading Tungku to full district status if given the mandate in the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election.
He said the pledge was part of his manifesto, aimed at ensuring that Tungku - currently a sub-district - can progress in tandem with other districts in Sabah.
“At the same time, there are still many infrastructure needs, including internet access in several areas of Tungku where connectivity is difficult. These will be improved,” he said when met by Bernama at a get-together with voters here today.
Abdul Hakim said Tungku also needed additional secondary schools to meet the needs of local residents, as well as the establishment of religious secondary schools, given that the majority of the population is Muslim.
He cited Tanjung Labian as an example, noting that the area has no secondary school, forcing parents to spend up to RM20 a day on transportation to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tungku or SMK Desa Kencana in Felda Sahabat - a cost that places a heavy burden on them.
He said the situation had led to some students attending school only two or three days a week, as their parents could not afford to send them daily.
Meanwhile, Abdul Hakim, who adopted the slogan ‘Sayangi Tungku’ for his campaign, described the people of Tungku as one big family and said that the spirit of love and unity must continue to be nurtured among its residents.
The Election Commission has set this Saturday (Nov 29) as polling day for the 17th Sabah State Election.
