GEORGE TOWN, Nov 26 (Bernama) -- The Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalulail, today graced the 100th anniversary celebration of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Wellesley here, which was his first primary school.
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin said that to this day, he still remembers the early moments he set foot on SK Wellesley in the early 1950s, studying in Year 1 and Year 2, with the school environment back then being one of discipline, but enriched with the love of teachers who patiently guided him, shaping the foundations of his character and identity until today.
His Royal Highness said that with SK Wellesley reaching the 100-year milestone, it marks a long journey filled with history, service and sacrifice, and also reflected the dedication of educators, pupils, alumni and parents in upholding knowledge, morality and noble values among the nation’s children over the past century.
“Throughout its 100 years of existence, SK Wellesley has witnessed various transformations in the country’s education landscape. From modest classrooms at the beginning of its establishment to the modern facilities today, this school has imparted knowledge, shaped character, and instilled the value of responsibility in every generation.
“I am very proud and moved to be part of this great legacy as a Royal Alumnus. SK Wellesley is not merely a place of learning, but the very foundation that shaped people to understand the meaning of respect, responsibility, good manners and compassion for society,” Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin said when officiating at SK Wellesley’s 100th Anniversary Celebration here today.
Also gracing the ceremony were the Raja Perempuan of Perlis, Tuanku Tengku Fauziah Tengku Abdul Rashid, Penang Education director Mohamad Dziauddin Mat Saad as well as SK Wellesley alumni.
The Raja of Perlis also said that the school has produced many successful alumni in various fields including administration, education, business, science, technology, and the arts, each contributing positively to the nation’s development.
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin said the success was proof that a balanced education between knowledge and character not only shapes competent leadership but also builds a society that has integrity, competitiveness and unity.
“The spirit of ‘Wellesley 100 Years of Excellence’ not only emphasises past achievements, but also serves as an inspiration to strengthen future education, by emphasising awareness of knowledge, moral values and harmonious cultural diversity,” His Royal Highness said.
Earlier, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin and the Raja Perempuan of Perlis consented to signing the SK Wellesley visitors' book and launched the SK Wellesley Alumni as well as graced the symbolic launch of school’s commemorative book (1925-2025), "100 Years of Excellence".
