SUNGAI PETANI, Nov 26 (Bernama) -- A coach for the Kedah state boys' Under-12 rugby team died after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a four-wheel-drive vehicle at Kilometer 3.5 Jalan Sungai Petani-Kuala Ketil, near here this afternoon.
Kuala Muda District Police Chief, ACP Hanyan Ramlan, said the victim, Mohd Amirul Awang, 34, suffered head injuries and was pronounced dead at the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital (HSAH).
"In the incident at about 2.30 pm, the victim, who was also a teacher at Sekolah Kebangsaan Tuan Syed Al-Jafri nearby, was riding a Honda Vario motorcycle from Sungai Petani heading towards Kuala Ketil.
"A Ford Ranger driven by a 27-year-old man, coming from the opposite direction, reportedly made a sudden 'U-turn. The victim did not have enough time to avoid it and collided with the front of the vehicle," he said in a statement here today.
He added that the victim was then rushed to the hospital by ambulance for treatment before being confirmed dead at about 4 pm this afternoon.
Hanyan further stated that the victim's body was taken to the HSAH Forensic Unit for a post-mortem, while a remand order for the 4x4 driver will be requested tomorrow to assist in the investigation.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
