RM15 MLN APPROVED FOR RECONSTRUCTION OF PASAR BESAR MELAKA SENTRAL - MAYOR

MELAKA, Nov 30 (Bernama) -- The Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) has approved an allocation of RM15 million for the construction of Pasar Besar Melaka Sentral at its original site next to the Melaka Sentral Terminal here.

Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) mayor Datuk Shadan Othman that the tender for the market’s construction was expected to be called in April or May next year, with work projected to take about two years and completion slated for 2028.

He said that the market, designed with the ‘Serambi Melaka’ concept, would be a modern single-storey building accommodating 330 traders and equipped with essential facilities.

“The construction of Pasar Besar Melaka Sentral will involve only a single-storey building, compared to the old two-storey structure, to make it easier for traders and visitors, especially the elderly, to buy essential goods,” he told reporters here last night.

He said this after the Melaka State Level World Town Planning Day 2025 celebration ceremony, which was officiated by Melaka state secretary Datuk Azhar Arshad and attended by Town and Country Planning director-general Datuk Dr Alias Rameli.

Commenting on earlier concerns about land subsidence in the area, Shadan said the site had undergone technical checks, with the soil structure assessed and confirmed safe for construction.

The media had previously reported that in 2016, land subsidence was detected at the old Pasar Besar Melaka Sentral, with the building structure deemed unsafe for use by the Malaysian Public Works Institute (IKRAM).

Following the incident, all traders were relocated to a temporary site in Bachang here and the old market building was subsequently demolished.
